I learned about dog-ears in high school physics. However, when I Google it, I can't find any info. It's some kind of phenomenon that occurs at sunset to the left and right of the setting sun that kind of looks like your picture. The effect is kind of like the sun having two ears. I remember my physics teacher, Mr. Thiessen (side note: He had a lisp. Can you imagine a worse last name for a person with a lisp?) called them dog-ears. I'm kind of leaning toward a vapor trail...yes...left by a jet. By the way...Vapor Trails...excellent CD by Rush!

It's either a "dog-ear", or it's light refracting off of a vapor trail.
