We're having a howlin' good time

We're having a howlin' good time...at the International Wolf Center, that is. We attended a "Behind the Scenes" event on Thursday courtesy of our new family membership. We were brought into a secluded area behing a fence and were shown how the handlers interact, medicate and all-around care for the wolf pack. As if on cue, the wolves started showing all the typical wolf behavior - dominance, submission, etc. Then for their encore, they did a howling rally. One of the wolves stood grandly atop a large rock, craned his neck in the air and let out an incredible howl. It was worth every penny of our membership. The boys were also fascinated with the road kill storage freezer in which they currently kept 6 deer, 20 or so dead beaver and a few skinned beavers ready for the next feeding.

Yesterday we left Ely (against our will, I think we all were very fond of the town) and headed to Silver Bay. We couldn't leave Silver Bay fast enough. Don't let the pretty name fool you. Although the town is on the coast of Lake Superior, it is a mining town with a rough crowd feel to it. We slept one night and packed up early to head out to the next destination, Grand Marais.

On our way to Grand Marnier (as Bob has mistakenly been calling it) we pulled over for breakfast. This resort, in the town of Tofte, was beautiful. It has a very similar look and feel of the Marginal Way in Downeast Maine. If we ever come back this way, we will stay there for sure.

Now we are in Grand Marais RV Park for the next three days. So far. so good. As I'm sitting here typing this via the campground's WiFi, I am looking out at the harbor. Again, it has a very East Coast feel to it. Who knew, right here near the Canadian border such a town exists? I am anxious to check out the shops and galleries so off I go.

It is great up here. Just back woodsy enough to keep it from being overly crowded and nice enough to not gross us out.
