New York-Day One

Okay, so after saying I don't like the city of New York and really had no desire to go visit, I ended up having a really good time. Spending a weekend away with my wonderful husband and children anywhere would be a really good time...In New York it was a really good time and a lot of walking.

We arrived at our hotel late Friday evening and immediately staked claim to our spots. Bed bugs be damned! I snuggled up with the blankets (yuck) and quickly arrived in dreamland.

Our first venture into the city was a mere 2 blocks away. As we approached the Empire State Building, I couldn't help but think of Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant in An Affair To Remember. They, and Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle. Thanks Meg and Tom for ruining a wonderfully romantic movie with a cheesy romantic comedy imitation. (Okay, I'll admit, I kinda liked that movie too.)

Anyway, we had beautiful views of the city albeit a bit overcast. The top of the building was covered in clouds for the remainder of the time spent in NYC so we were lucky to have the view we had that morning.

Next we took the subway to the Statten lsland Ferry for a quick ride on the river to see Lady Liberty.

(I gotta tell you, the camera adds more than 10 pounds to her. She is much smaller in person. I tried to capture her on her good side.)

From there, we walked to Ground Zero. Before looking around the site and the museum, we decided to explain to the boys what happened on 9/11. We danced around the fact that the terrorists used planes as weapons. It's difficult enough traveling with kids, we didn't want fear added to the mix. I realize they have to find out about all the ugliness out there but with each explanation, their view of the world gets a little less innocent. I truly can't imagine what that day must have been like for the poor souls caught in the building, the relatives of those lost in the attack, and the people of New York in general. The attack is still incomprehensible to me.

After that, we walked, walked and walked some more until we finally located the subway line we were looking for...or so we thought. We still made it home okay in the fading daylight, but we took a little round-a-bout way to get back to the hotel.

I was out numbered in our decision on where to eat and, as a result, we ended up at a sushi bar/korean seafood place. I can't get beyond the raw fish thing and now I know for future reference that I like my crab legs HOT. Cold=Yuck. I filled up on rice and shrimp tempura while the boys feated -- yes feasted -- on sushi.

Welcome home! As I was falling asleep last night, I HONESTLY thought, "Where have the Sour Swedes been?" and then I remembered!

Sushi is good and good for you!

We had such a great time! I agree with the Kraut that we had a very nice family time. Of course we were yelling and threatening the kids part of the time but it was still a lot of fun.
