We're leavin' on a jet plane...

The Sour-Swede's are headed to New York. It was my Christmas gift to the entire family. The Swede once did a quick walk-through on his was to visit his brother, but has never spent any real time in New York City.

He is forever asking me if I would like to go sometime. I wouldn't.

Now, I love to travel the United States. I love rural, picturesque parts to the United States. I am a country girl at heart. I despise crowds. I hate noise. I love nature and sunlight. Manhattan offers very little of what I like.

I've visited NY a few times in the past and, after visiting, realized my love for Chicago even more. I am one of those rare people for whom NY does nothing.

However, when pondering what I could surprise The Swede with for Christmas, I had an Ah-Ha! moment. I would take us all to NY for a long weekend. (How was I to know that the Bears first, and possibly only, playoff game would be that weekend?)

We could so something The Swede and I absolutely love and see a Broadway show. My enthusiasm grew.

I chose The Lion King because it is my very favorite show even though this will be my fourth time seeing it.

Two years ago, I spent an ungodly amount of money on two tickets to The Lion King. Our then 7-year-old son and I took the train into Chicago then walked to the theater a few blocks away. I specifically purchased an aisle seat for him. He literally gasped when the animals went by. The baby elephant even winked at him. During the number Endless Night, Simba sings to his dead father asking him why he has left when he needs him so badly. Our son leaned over and whispered to me, "Do you have a lump in your throat like I do?" I was so moved that he was feeling the heartache in the song. At the end of the day on our train ride home, I recall thinking it was my best day that summer and worth every penny. Now I can share that experience with our now 7-year-old son. I can hardly wait.

We plan on doing the typical sightseeing stuff -- visiting Ground Zero, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, etc. -- but we also saw something that our older son really wants to do.

That's where you readers come in.

We saw on television a sandwich place in Manhattan. It is like a big storefront with sandwiches behind plastic doors. The entire place is like one huge vending machine. What is it called? Where is it? He really, really wants to go. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Anybody have any other suggestions?

I don't know about the sandwich place, but my recommendation would be to go see "Stomp" if it's playing somewhere. I've heard it's great, although I wouldn't know for sure...

BECAUSE I'VE NEVER SEEN IT!!!!!! ;-)

Have fun in NYC. I've never been there.

It's been 11 years. It's time to get over it.

This trip is gonna be fun, but now I must worry about getting us to and from the airport safely. I sound like the lady from Tinley Park who is afraid of going into the city.

I am so jealous. I just added "going to see a show on broadway" to my meager list of things I wanted to do before I die. Sounds simple enough but it would be one of those things I would have to do by myself because I think it would be safe to say that my husband would never go to New York.

Maybe you and The Swede could go and Malboro Man and I could stay home with the children.
