Welcome Back, Morning Mayhem

Ahhh...the barking out orders, the chaotic getting dressed, brushing teeth and scrambling to find coats, make lunches and fill backpacks. The break is over and the daily grind begins.

Why is it that we go through this pandemonium each school morning? Wouldn't one think that we'd have our routine down by now? I swear, it's a scene right out of Super Nanny -- and I'm not talkin' the "after", no, no, no. This bedlam is definitely a snipet from the "before" montage of what is so wrong with a family that they must call in a professional for help.

I've tried Super's suggestion of making out a chart with our morning routine.

I've tried not saying a word so the boys face the consequences of their own actions. (This one never lasts the duration. I, being the perfectionist that I am, will not allow it to go all the way as to make them tardy for school.)

I've tried laying out clothes, making lunches and gathering the belongings the night before.

But, alas, it always comes down to absolute morning mayhem.

Now, however, they're out the door and on their way to school with The Swede and I miss them already. As much as the noise, disarray, and mess make me crazy, I suppose I have come to accept it as part of family life. During the turmoil, I long for peace and quiet but, the truth is, once it's nice and still around here, I get bored and lonely. Because, along with all of the commotion comes the sweetness, hilarity and tender moments with the boys that melt my heart and make me so, so thankful that I'm their mom and that this is my life.

I'm tired just reading that. I have a difficult enough time getting myself up in the morning, kudo's to you!

My personal favorite threat is the one telling them you will leave them home by themselves if they don't get around, moments before you are ready to walk out the door. Even at three I think Miss L sees through this one......

Our younger son used to be so stubborn that many times I had to double back to get him after trying the "ignore him and walk away until he gets scared and follows me" routine. He proved he was more stubborn than me.

The mornings are getting better because we are getting up later. I think the false sense of security that we have time really used to hurt the whole process.

It's the craziest irony of it all!

You should be at my sister in law's house in the morning to see your mayhem times 2.

Little Swede has a friend who comes from a family of 5 boys and 1 girl, plus the parents. Can you imaging what their house is like in the morning?
